Lorelei Cartner Obituary

Lorelei F. Cartner, 99, of Baldwinsville, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at St. Joseph's Hospital. Lorelei was born to Frederick and Sylvia (Whipple)Burtch in a snowstorm at her grandparent's house in Hinmansville, New York. She grew up the oldest of 7 children, and called Baldwinsville home for most of her life. There is a picture of 2 year-old Lorelei sitting on the wing of The Spirit of St. Louis at Amboy Airport from Charles Lindbergh's countrywide tour following his transatlantic flight in 1927.
Lorelei relished the special year she lived with her paternal grandmother while attending Pomeroy School in Cortland before rejoining her family in Lysander. She enjoyed summers in a rental cabin on Lake Como with her grandmother and siblings. Lorelei graduated from Baldwinsville Academy (later Elizabeth Street School) in 1942. Soon after, Lorelei married Charles on September 26, 1942 and moved to Fort Jackson, South Carolina to support soldiers heading off to fight in WWII. Upon returning to Syracuse, she worked soldering circuit boards for sonar and radar systems as part of the war effort. Lorelei, or "Lolly" as she was known by friends and family, also enjoyed working at Dey Brothers Department Store. In her later years she trained as a home health aide and gave comfort to many.
Lorelei was a faithful Christian who lived a rich life enjoying history, travel, animals, movies, crossword puzzles, and playing cards. She created beautiful tole paintings on wood and loved to crochet. Lolly took great joy in the 60 years spent camping with her family and lifelong friends on Charleston Lake in Ontario, Canada. Lolly had fun learning how to belly dance, and enjoyed a 33 year membership in OA, where she formed lifelong friendships. She was best known for her ability to recount stories from the past with tremendous detail and accuracy.
Lorelei was predeceased by a son, Charles F. Cartner in 1991. She was predeceased by her husband of 69 years, Charles H. Cartner in 2012. Lorelei is also predeceased by her siblings Chuck (Mary) Burtch, Beverly (Larry) Russell, Richard "Dick" Burtch, Frederic "Bud" (Margaret "Peggy") Burtch, Joyce(Jim) Catherman, Barbara(Frank) Cronk, and her infant brother Lincoln.
